another possibility is the tractor had a former life carrying a string bean harvester. i have a 240 that had 3 hydraulic handles and valves but no fast hitch. i checked with the former owner and he said it had carried a chisholm-rider bean harvester. that also explained the second serial number, which was prefaced with "cr". i think some 404s and 504s were used that way, as well as 240s and 340s.
