i set the ring gaps so they dont line up, like the way you describe, as far as the rubber o-rings, i remeber reading somewhere to dunk them in liquid laundry soap, when i rebuilt my farmall b , i used the laundry soap, works good. sleeves should drop in pretty easy. be sure to clean the groove in the top of the block where the sleeve sits, otherwise the sleeve wont go in all the way. the head holds the sleeve in so when you put the pistons in, they may walk back out, use a short bolt and washer to hold the sleeve in.
