What happens if you close the choke a small/ large amount when the sputtering starts? If the engine picks up, it is fuel delivery/ lack of fuel problem. Can't remember which person on the board recommended removing the drain plug on the carb bowl & inserting a fitting to bring a clear plastic tube up beside the carb bowl to check the gas level & float action. Should be 1/8 inch pipe fitting. Possible cause of trouble in the ignition dept. could be bad terminal ends/ wires anywhere in the ign. line from the switch to the coil/ points area.
