How's the oil get there???

Now with my "H" transmission cover back on, after re-filling with new oil.... got to wondering how the oil in the transmission and rear-end levels out, or moves between the two compartments. It looks like the filler hole sits right over top of the divider wall; does this ensure equal amount of oil on both sides?? Seems the level is not up to the inspection plug. Just wonderin" Thanks.
