Brian - You are 100% correct in both #1 and #2! Incidentally 85W-90 in the tranny works just fine here in chilly western NY. All 3 of my tractors had been filled with it for years - they run and shift just fine at -10 deg. (When it gets colder than that I stay inside by the fire!)
