Steven, In most cases, you are correct, there is no need. I believe the choice is less problematic than many other modifications done to tractors. The use of stem seals can assist in reducing plug fouling and oil consumption in a unit that is often idled. Most engine manufacturers use seals today that are far more directly in control of the guide oil than umbrella seals. (to meet emissions requirments, and reduce wear by providing controlled lube). It will be fine. My two cents, JimN
