The PTOs on early tractors from day one until early 1941 were "slot" or "dog" driven while later ones were spline driven. To put later PTO in the early tractors transmission counter shaft has to be changed. There were actually 3 differentn PTOs used the flat type "dog" drive from 1939 to early 1941, the flat type spline drive from early 1941 to late 1942 and the late type that the housing extends 6-8 inches or so behind transmission case from late 1942 0n.
