Rotate the engine 180 degrees and then look at the flywheel timing mark and your No1 piston should be at TDC. Another way to tell if you are on the compression stroke with No1 piston is to

PS: Once you have the head on and the valves adjusted put your thumb over No1 plug hole and have someone hand crank the engine until you feel compression and then look for the timing mark on the flywheel until it is aligned.
