Most lead-acid batteries lose about 2% of their charge per day when they are not being used/charged. I used to work on a car lot - it was not unusual to see a brand-new car or truck with a dead battery in it because it had not been run frequently enough to maintain battery charge. Even a battery cutoff switch will not totally prevent this... simple humidity will cause additional discharge on an otherwise unused or disconnected battery. Of course, most cars have computers that put a constant drain on the battery, but that is in the milliamp range.
