I do not claim to be pipefitter but I worked at large chemical plant for 37 years and have seen untold thousands of pipe jobs. We always used tape on screwed stainless pipe (mainly to prevent galling) and good grade of pipe dope on all other screwed pipe. Oil will probaly be as good to prevent leaks but pipe dope is better at preventing siezed threads if you want to take it apart. WE usually used FEL PRO C5A anti sieze compound.
