Sparkplugs, am I missing something?

I went to get the new plugs for my Super A, I was going to try the AC C86 plug be the parts store was out. This place deals with a lot of tractors and the guy behind the counter said all the Farmallers around ran a Motorcraft BTS10 plug. I got home with them and when I tried to put them in, I couldn't tighten them. As you can see, the hex is alot shorter and when the plug is finger tight, the hex is already too deep in the recess to get the socket on it. So I went to get the AC plugs and they look about the same. I got a thin wall socket and it still won't work. I know some of you run the AC plugs, so whats up? How to you tighten them? Or am I doing something stupid? Any ideas?
