It should be stamped on an aluminum plate on the inside of the left-hand seat bracket, unless it is a VERY early 1939 and then it may be on the pedal guard.

If it is a serial number less than (I think) 205,000 the engine serial number should be the same as the tractor number, assuming it still has the original block. The engine serial number is stamped on a flat, raised boss on the right side of the block, below #1 sparkplug, kind of behind the magneto.
