The lead from the starter switch (battery) goes to one side of the ammeter, and the alternator and ALL electrical loads connect to the other side. If it reads backwards (CHARGE with the engine not running), simply swap the wires between the two ammeter posts. Verify that the alternator is doing it's job by checking the voltage at the battery after it has run and charged a while. You are looking for 14.5 to 15.5 Volts.
