D.R. Gray: In the top plate with the shift lever, there are 3 shift rails. one for reverse, one for 1st and 2nd and one for 3rd and 4th. Those rails all have detent balls with springs that hold transmission in or out of a particular gear. You mention the tractor has been parked for years, thus those springs and balls could be stuck or rusted. The first thing I would try is putting the top cover complete with shift lever and rails, submerged in a container of oil for several days. When you remove it from the oil, try shifting with cover sitting on blocks. You should be able to feel those detent balls going into detents. Should the oil not free the balls up, they are, or I should say were available from CaseIH as recently as 2 years ago.
