Farmall M brake adjustment

Just got a Farmall M and need to adjust the brakes and i dont have my book for it yet so thought i would ask here. my pedals go almost to the end of their travel before i have any brakes, so i adjusted the spring and bolt that hooks to the pedal thinking that was the adjustment, but reading on an old message on here it talkes about a bolt on the bottom of the brake band case that needs to be tightened and then backed out 1/2 round. i thought i better make sure i'm doing this correctly before i go buy new bands, but still might have to do that. so have i dont this correctly with the adjustment of the turnbuckle that is on the pedals or is that just for pedal travel?
