HELP!!! D239 Engine

Put a rebuilt short block (new crankshaft, standard mains & rod brs., rods remaned, pistons/sleeves, cambushings & line bored.)in a 544 Hydro. Engine was running when we started this project, it had some brass in pan, so thought we'd put an all ready to go engine in !! Now it will not run I've double checked, triple checked timing, valves & pump. We have fuel, will run on ether, but will not take off. I have rebulit many of these (D239 engines) over the years and never had this happen. Any ideas or other things you can think of??? Thanks Jim
