Clamping positive to negative will surely burn something out really fast! Generally, cross-jumping isn't a good idea, and the post about using a 6/12v battery charger with jump-start capabilities is a great idea. Having a fresh 6v is good, too. I cross-jumped a 6v with a 12v a few weeks ago. I used a 2810 Ford diesel tractor. I removed the 6v battery outright. I clamped negative from the Ford battery to the starter switch on the Farmall and positive from the Ford battery to the fender of the Farmall. I hit the starter rod and she fired right up. I disconnected the positive cable and it died; thus, I knew the electricals weren't charging. I only let it run this way for a couple of minutes. I'd use this method only when absolutely necessary.
