Farmall A - left side brake and seals

I'm replacing the brakes on my A and have found the trans. seals to be bad on the left side. Lots of gunky grease in the brake area. The seals into the trans. are not cooperating to get them out.
Can I pull the seal housing off so I can punch these seals out from the backside??
My fear is the bearing and diff. will drop when I pull this off and I won't be able to get it back up into pos. when putting this back on with the new seals.
Any suggestions?
