Put a test light on the terminal that leads into the starter from the switch with the little lever on it. If the light lights bright when you pull on the start lever, the starter is open (probably brushes) Whack the starter modestly with a hammer near the end away from the engine. If it then works, it is brushes. If the light does not come on, it is a defective big switch. JimN
