They should be level to allow the gasket to seal correctly all other places. It will certainly pinch the gasket at the cylinder, but I think it will cause leaks. If it were mine, I would probably make a milling tool for a ridge reamer mount to mill each "RIM" off level (unless I was going to replace them, then I would do some measurement to be certain not to follow that bad plan. Cleaning the block groove, is mandatory for full depth seating. Who could guess what someone else did? Did you determine where the leak was? Good luck, JimN
