Farmall A/B rear axle

Just bought a Farmall A, except it has the wide rear axle like a B but a wide front like an A that has has had a tube welded onto the left front axle so it could be extended out even with the rear wheel. The decal on the radiator shroud is an A but the ID tag is missing. I want to narrow it up to be an A. Can the axle extension on the left side just be removed the the left drop axle moved up next to the transmission? What would be the procedure to use? Thanks.
