706 282D 1234 shift lever no effect

The tractor was loaned for haying. When we went to pick it up today, the 1 2 3 4 shift lever has no effect. The vertical shaft going down the steering column into the top front of the trans turns but no resistance is felt. Just sort of free wheels. Reverse works and the high low shifter works. Tractor will move when in reverse and also move in low low forward. It also appears they shelled out the Torque Amplifier. Any info on repair or replacement of the TA appreciated Any one have any ideas on either of the issues Thanks, Frank
