Most all makers of alternators caution against doing that because the resulting voltage surge MAY damage the alternator's diode(s) or electronic voltage regulator. You may do it once, or 50 times, and get by with it, but sooner or later, you will be sorry when you let all the smoke out of the alternator. You can get a hand-held ANALOG voltmeter of adequate quality for $10.00 to $20.00, so why temp fate, and risk burning out the alternator? You are looking for charging voltage in the range of 13.5 to about 14.5 Volts, or dlightly more.
