If your starter is working OK, there is no need to change anything, it will work just fine for many years on 12 volts. There are many, many tractors out there with 12 volts on the original 6 volt starters. If your starter is getting a rewind anyway(you said it is stuck), Then you may as well have it wound for 12 volts.
