An interesting question. I've always used the seal although it's not easy to get the thing to set square in the groove when screwing the cover back on and for that reason it usually seeps a small amount of oil but if you don't use the seal it leaks like a sieve.
Replies from some of the other "H" owners would prove very interesting! Somebody with more expertise probably has a solution.
