the 2 little posts on the top get loose and burn through giving it just enough draw to try the starter. Sometimes the armature in the starter get burned and it grounds out on the wall which will make it hard to start and draw lots of power while running or if the solinoid is bad it will ground it.

I have had the key switch posts come loose inside and draw power too with key in but not out???.

I would start with the solenoid first since that is always getting burned up.
