Gas Tank Baffle

Hi - Looking inside a 1940 Farmall H gas tank, there is a vertical baffle halfway between the front and the back that seems to divide the tank into two different compartments. This is an X1, and only has one fuel cap on the fore section, as it should. The aft section of the tank appears to not be accessible. Does anybody know what this baffle is for? Thank you.
