Delbert, Take out your shifter lever, check the underside tip for round wear...it should be rectangular with sharp lines. If it is worn it is easily replaced with a better one. A worn tip can be welded and reshaped too. Not a hard job at all. Good luck. Oh, a worn shifter tip will definetly cause the problem you're describing.
(And sometimes it will get stuck in 2 gears).
