Well if there isn't any confidence its best to be as carefull as one can be. Leave the battery disconnected until your ready to check your work. With the key off touch the ground cable to the frame and if there are no sparks then turn the key on and check again. There will be some spark there as you will be energizing the coil, guages, etc. but if there is a lot of spark then there might be something grounding out that shouldn't be. As far as the ampmeter goes they are hooked up inline of a wire (not power to ground for example) and if its hooked up backwards it probobly won't read right. So as long as you have a book that shows how to wire it up you shouldn't have a problem as long as you know how to read a wire schematic.
