t.r.y., Allan is surenough right on this. In the Oklahoma panhandle where I farmed. On rare occurences when it rained, and the irrigation wells were shut down. Also one would need a break in the wind too. Anyway the little popping sounds that the growth joint would make is music to a Corn Farmer.
The popping sound or the sound of an ear of corn being shucked as Allan said is neat especially when one hasn't heard it before.
I will say I have heard it in the day some but more in eaarly morning and late afternoon / early evening.
