My 404 had a similar problem that ended up being 4 broken bolts and a couple of sheared pins. I'm not sure why they broke but I have a feeling that someone mistreated the tractor before I bought it and it was just hanging on. Anyhow, if you are hearing any chattering or if you can move the PTO shaft in and out (mine would go about 3/8 inch), stop using it and check it out. Not too hard to fix as long as there isn't any gear damage.
