I always turn off the gas. I don't know when the tractor will run again and that empties the float bowl so that varnish won't set up inside the carb.

Do get the mag shut off fixed just as a safety feature it may come in handy some day. Some clubs won't let you show if you can't turn off the engine from the drivers seat.
