Assuming you want a usable tractor, and not a show queen, I would go with the 12v system for two reasons only. they are (when done correctly) nearly maintanence free. and second they charge the battery more adequately. I like the mitsubishi alternators out of mid 80s Nissan PU. They are small and work well. Others will say go to 6v and that is ok too as long as you have all the parts to replace the missing gen regulator and light bulbs. The 12v sys will cost less than scrounging new 6v components. Just my thinking, JimN
