Steve,

1) YES you can leave the tractor at Negative ground........... regardless if it were originally Positive, whatever turns your crank.

2) If you do, the coil should be wired with its lil - terminal to the distributor.

3) The coil will still spark even if wired backwards, but not as efficient, maybe run a tad hotter, and the spark isnt quite as good (may not run quite as well).

4) If it was changed from Pos to Neg the genny can still work fine PROVIDED it was properly polarized and assuming the Voltage Regulator is bi polar and works at either polarity as many are.

5) If a tractor with an ammeter has its polarity reversed, the ammeter leads need to be swapped or else it reads bass ackwards. Maybe yours was converted and all was done correctly (as posted) so it shouldnt be any problem now. If the ammeter is wired correct, if you turn lights or ignition on tractor not running, it should swing over to the - discharge direction, does yours???

6) I recommend good quality wire core wires instead of the carbon core suppresor types and likewise, NON resistor hotter spark plugs.

7) Adjust the carbs float level,,,,,,,dont run the carb any over rich,,,,,,make sure the choke opens fully and theres no air cleaner or air inlet restrictions,,,,,,,use fresh clean water free 87 octane gas,,,,,,,,,,,keep the engine temp up higher,,,,,,,,,have fresh clean plugs and new or good proper adjusted points and a good conensor and you shouldnt have so many plug fouling problemns unless shes a bad oil burner and low on compression
