Use a good masking tape and mask off the area around the plate and use paint stripper on it. Works every time. Sometimes making a pencil and paper rubbing can assist. Place, and hold firm, a piece of typing paper over the tag, rub the paper with the side of a #2 pencil, making a pattern on the paper. It has been done on many tags.
