On the starter, there are two large connections and one possibly two smaller ones. If you have two smaller connections, take an ohmmeter and check for continuity between the small ones and the large one that connects to the starter field coils. Hook the wire from the starter button to the OTHER small connection. The one that has continuity with the starter fields is used to provide twelve volts to something (like a coil) only when the starter is running.
