Cubs are "pretty dependable" but like any other mechanical marvel, things wear out. The tractor is, after all, around 30 years old. If it had a hard life before you, there could be many other problems with it just waiting to rear their ugly heads. That's how antique tractors are... You pays your money and you takes your chances. If the shifter just flops around, the fix is pretty simple. What happened is that the ball on the end of the shift handle slipped out of the shifting forks. Take the shifter off, and use a screwdriver to center the shifter fork for 2nd and 3rd.
