Jim - Well I guess I'd try polarizing the generator again (connect the wiring and battery, then momentarily jumper the BAT and GEN terminals at the regulator).

Then disconnect the wiring at the generator repeat your open circuit test with the generator F terminal grounded, and report what you find.

FWIW I doubt wear on the 3rd wear would cause the polarity reversal are seeing (a worn out 3rd brush ordinarily has the generator just stop working). Perhaps a ground in the wiring between the field and the 3rd brush could do it? I honestly don't know!
