I just rebuilt my c169. there is two long bolts, one in each side of the retainers that tighten them down around the crank. the bolts go through the bottom retainer and into the top one holding them together,so i don't think you can get either one off with out pulling the pan and i would be afraid of using a broken retainer because the bolts would not pull the 2 sides together which is how you get it to seal. The bolts i spoke of are about 2 inches long. I'm fairly sure you can not get to them with the pan on.hope this helps. can,t you support the engine with your engine hoist while you remove the pan and then block it back up for safety while you are under it.
