Crankcase holds 8 qts. It will need slightly more than that to account for the oil held by the filter. Don't know what you mean by the cap on the pipe indicator, it is filled to the top petcock on the side of the pan. Sounds like someone put a pipe nipple and cap on it?. Put in 8 quarts, run it, and add until it comes out the top petcock. Synthetic is overkill for that engine. If you want multigrade use 15W40, perhaps 10W30 in the winter. In warm weather 30W is all you need. All major brands of oil meet the same specifications. Pick one and use it.
