Hi JF, get the washing soda, I use Arm&Hammer. A lot of places do have it. Seems like you use baking soda to remove paint? I does not matter how much water you have as long as it is submerged. I use a pound for fifty gallons. I use a big sacrificial anode, and in your case something that wraps around the inside of your barrel would be dandy, you can get a lot of surface area and get away from the line of sight deal. You may want to use smaller anodes inside but not touching the block to get good coverage. Try moving the anode around in the tank to find the spot that draws the most amps. In my opinion if you are only pulling six or eight amps you can do it faster with a wire brush. More amps equals less time. I cleaned one whole engine that was rusted solid, had been buried for who knows how long. It drew between 40 and 90 amps for three weeks, but when it came out it was disassembled in 30 minutes with no breakage whatsoever. Remember when it is drawing a lot it is also giving off a lot of hydrogen, so vent accordingly. Play with it a little and you will swear by it.
