Farmall A - Starter, battery or Solenoid

My A starter just kinda growls when trying to start. This happened after having the charger on for a while the other day. When I tried to start it, the negative side ground cable got very hot & now I'm left with the growling starter. Question is, could this be a battery prob?... I have nursed this battery along for 2 years now! Or, should I spend money on a new solenoid first?...Or, is it the starter? Where should I start... the starter has never showed a hint of a problem before... Thanks for the help....... the grass is really starting to take off & I need to get this thing goin!
