REPLACE the coil and points. Some of the responses below indicate that you need a ballast resistor, and that may mislead you to believe that all you need to do is add a ballast resistor and everything will be fine... WRONG. The damage has been done, and the coil will not "heal" through the addition of a ballast resistor. It's broken, ruined, destroyed, damaged beyond repair. Replace it. Since you're going to replace it anyway, get a 12V coil and skip the ballast resistor.
