Jarrod - There's no "gears" in engagement in 5th gear in an H or M, they're all direct drive thru the sliding gear topshaft. The sliding 4th/5th gear engages the splines on the back end of the transmission input shaft that is separated from the top sliding shaft by the pilot bearing. There are gears in mesh like the constant mesh gears where the initial reduction from 1650 rpm to 540 rpm takes place but if there's no load on the PTO or hyd. belly pump there's no load on those gears and they shouldn't make much noise. If You have gear whine or howl in 5th gear You didn't have before You may have the top sliding shaft/pinion slightly out of the old position it ran in on the ring gear. Could also be the small pinion gears howling on the bull gears. FWIW, every M & H that has had the transmission & rearend apart that I've seen normally makes noise. As long as the oil is clean they should still run another 30-40 years. ;-)
