It would be best if (with what I gather is your experience level with IH, it is all an adventure) to have The IT service manual, a original Farmall Owners manual, and a Farmall service manual. The differences sometimes give perspective not found in only one book. It is very much OK to run the tractor in Direct (NO TA) drive. It will not hurt a thing till you get around to the repair. Shifting from 4th to fifth with a pause between gears (or learn to sync shift /double clutch and throttle down at the same time), will get it going in fifth (there will be a bit of grind into high, consider it normal) Keep us in the loop, JimN
