Just put a cooking therm in the rad when you have it running those guages have to get pretty warm to register. You can always check it out by removing the bulb and lighting a match will move the guage. Better yet remove bulb put it in a small metal container of water with a thermometer and using a propane torch you can test the guage and therm at the same time.
