where did you get the new gauge just because its new doesn"t mean its a good one.On the H the temp gauge is a thermally operated gauge meaning it require no electrity it works like a therma couple in a gas furnace heat causes the probe to make an electrical charge that moves the gauge up and down.I would heat some water to a boil and drop the probe end of the gauge in a check to see if the gauge will operate that way. I suspect its a bad gauge I have had the same experience a couple of times Hopes this helps RIVER BOTTOM FARMER
