Ended up the 656D my dad bought new in 1967 when I was 10. The tractor has well over 20,000 hours and the engine has never had anything done other than gaskets replaced. The last 2 years dad had been sick so he only used the tractor maybe 10-20 hours per year cutting hay. The tractor starts good and runs good until you get over 1500 rpm. At that point it developes an uneven miss. This goes away when you put a load to it. Even running down a flat road in 5th it misses but once you start up a small hill it levels off and pulls great. Another point is that the throttle linkage was worn so that it was only running at 1500 rpm max. I adjusted the linkage to get it back to the rated engine speed. Could there be a relationship? Maybe some Stanadyn? Could it be the old fuel which I would say would be about 50/50 with new fuel? Is the pump going bad? Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thank you.
