To my understanding, a 6volt coil is to be operated on 6 volts. A 12v coil is one of two types, it is either designed to be used with a ballast resistor (from mid 60's chev, or chrysler), or designed to run on 12v without a resistor. Look in the archives about 4 terminal solenoids if yours has a solenoid. Bypassing the resistor to make more starting fire. A 6v coil on 12v needs the resistor. a 12v coil that (usually) says on it "external resistor not needed" is to be used without a resistor. A 12v coil that uses a resistor needs one. Could you use a 12v needs a resistor coil on 6v (probably)
