That basic transmission was used in the M, Super M, SMTA, 400, 450, and 560. When the 560 came out, that"s when the rear end troubles started. Differential and final drives couldn"t take 65 hp. After the 560"s were updated, they"d last forever. When the 656 was introduced in 1965, the basic design of the transmission was the same as the old M, however, it used mostly tapered roller bearings instead of ball and straight roller bearings. Now, I"m sure you"re not going to be doing tillage work with your Cummins-powered M 10 hours a day. You"ll be fine doing light work or tractor pulling once in a while.
